Finnish and American companies seek opportunities for cooperation in the defence and security sector
The first Finnish-American defence and security conference was held in Washington on 9 November 2011. On the way, Finnish enterprises got acquainted with US markets and vendors.
Officials and business representatives from both countries presented their views on current issues in the field of defence and security. At the meeting, the topics of discussion were the market outlook, cyber security, Finland’s F-18 fighter jet programme, arctic strategy, experiences of past and present cooperation and opportunities for new cooperation. The Association of Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries (AFDA) and the National Defence Industrial Association (NDIA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create closer cooperation. The memorandum was signed by AFDA and NDIA chairmen Heikki Allonen and Lawrence P. Farrell Jr.
Finnish products are trusted
The speakers emphasised the trust US officials and enterprises have in Finnish products. This trust is a reflection of the two countries’ long-term collaboration in both the F-18 fighter-jet programme and over cyber security
The maintenance of a manufacturing base that is innovative, high-performance, effective and profitable requires a strategic shift from public and private sector actors alike. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman ja Raytheon expressed interest in long-term cooperation with Finnish companies in the development of technology
“It was great to see how Finnish enterprises and their expertise are appreciated in the USA. Our cooperation is significant, and it clearly benefits both parties and promotes the development of high-level technological solutions,” said AFDA Secretary General Tuija Karanko.
The conferences were supported by the Finnish and US defence ministries. Finland’s ambassador in Washington, Ritva Koukku-Ronde, welcomed the event and was pleased that relations between Finland and the US are being promoted in this way.
The event was arranged by the Association of Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries (AFDA), the US National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), The American Chamber of Commerce in Finland, AmCham, and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation’s (TEKES) Safety and Security Programme.
